We recorded the first episode of Psychosis Sucks, and quickly discovered that when we start talking about navigating the mental health system, we are never at a loss for words.
This podcast will take a closer look at programs and treatment pathways intended to connect people to care. We plan to bring in clinicians, first responders, legal professionals, program leaders, family members, and people with lived experience.
Together, we will examine what is working, who is still not being reached, and why. We also want to understand what makes a program successful in one locale and whether those lessons can be applied elsewhere.
That is the plan! Keeping us to 40 minutes may be our first implementation challenge.

How did we get here?
In the first episode, Susan Partovi, MD, and Ann Marie Council, JD, discuss what brought them to this work and why they believe change is needed.
Then get to know Dr. Partovi herself as she talks about poverty medicine, street psychiatry, grave disability, treatment resources, supported living, and the different responses to psychiatric and other medical emergencies.
This first episode runs approximately one hour.

In Episode 2, the tables turn as Dr. Susan Partovi interviews Ann Marie Council. Ann Marie shares the challenges she faced as a lawyer attempting to navigate California’s mental health system. She talks about what she tried to do, and the barriers she faced at nearly every turn.
